I met Bob in 1969  at Piedmont High.

He approached me at school and handed me my wallet which I had lost while riding my Bicyclea back from work in Berkeley.

Everything was in the wallet and he just honestly gave it back. Context this was quite unexpected since I had spent 1968 and early 69 in the South Bronx where honestly was  unusual.

Bob and me and Jim Anderson became  close friends. we all had Motorcycles.  The three musketeers riding down college  under the rock ridge BART station  standing on our seats  when we drove passed a park cop car. we all dropped to our seats in unison.

We got some strange looks but no ticket that night

Bob had a Yamaha  Rd350? Jim had a Kawasaki  Mark 1 500 (Rice rocket) I had a Norton 750 commando.

In late June 1973 I had my big Motorcycle wreck  when I returned to Oakland in Mid 1974 I got together with Jim Anderson who had also had a wreck on his bike, broke his pelvis.

and I learned that Bob had perished in a car crash (low speed as a passenger) I was very  sad, I made a personal commitment to remember bob and to mention him at any gathering of our friends  Bob's dad was the pastor at eh Plymouth church on Oakland avenue.

Jim Anderson had a younger brother. (Robert) I think. One day I was at my Apartment on 1516 1sat avenue Talking with Jim, both of us recovering from or MC wrecks when Robert came over and asked if He could Buy Jim's Motorcycle , Jim refused  telling his he did not think he was a safe enough driver , Robert asked me if I would sell my wrecked Norton. I said I no longer had it, it was junked and not repairable.   I mentioned that I thought Bob's Yamaha was probably at Bob's dad's house.  Robert called Bob's father and offered to buy the motorcycle Well Robert bought the motorcycle and I heard that he was killed on it in a high speed crash in Fremont. I felt so terrible and wished I had kept my mouth shut. Jim sank deep into sadness and  seemed to drop from the circle of friends.   I saw  Jim Once in the late 80's and tried to keep in touch but it just did not happen, Jim gets his own article , he was a true friend.

Cecelia Cortez

I met Cecelia at PWP , She was quite pretty and  had a great smile. SHe has a Son Mauricio. about 8 ?

I understood from her that she  was married very young  to someone arranged . Family or other.

In any case Cecilia was tender Loving and traditional , From Mexico.

I liked her allot , I felt though like she liked me allot but I felt under some pressure for a committment. Interestingly I felt like she was a very worthy potential life partner. I though was more interested in a longer friendship courtship etc. I felt like we were in synch on many things but not on timing. . I felt like she wanted more faster than I did. I tried to maintain a friendship and to help her in any way I could.  I helped her to transition from BAnk teller to Real estate agent (by loaning her money to take classes., she honorably paid me back.

As time passed we  stayed friends but with some distance. She was definitley lookin gfor a marraige partner. and found one. He was a mormon and I think she converted and they seemed happy.

She was in the bay area some years later and we spent some  time together.  She let me know that she still cared very much fo rme. While the feelings were mutual I was not going to do anything that either of us woudl have to regret or lie about.

She moved to the central valley , I think of her often and with fond memories.

She knew I worked with my hands and woudl often massage them ,

I lost track of her a few years ago as she seemed to withdraw from Social media and stopped responding to messages.

Joan Woodburry Sacramento 1973  sporadically to present

The angels of recovery

I was recovering from my serious Motorcycle accident  , After several months I was able to use crutches and  try to walk. My goal was to increase or double my efforts daily. Day one make it to the front gate and back Day two out of the gate adn down the block and back. within a couple weeks i was hobbling around the block.  Apparently my walks got the attention of the two firls living in a Old Sacramento bungalow style house. we smiled and greeted each other. One was Georgia  a nice looking brunette Social chit chat war stories  how did you get hurt ?

We made friends and it felt good they were my age Georgia's roomate was Joan woodbury.

I begane to spend more time withthem and becasme romantically involved with Georgia.

We only had fun but there was not an intense connection. One thing I remember was Georgia saying "Promise you will never forget me" well Georgia whereever you are I did not and never will forget you. I carried a little leather lace until it  disintegrated but I never forgot her.

So during our times together we oftern spent time with  Joan and her boyfriend.  after some time I noticed Joan and Joan noticed me and  there was some passion there. Joan and her boyfriend broke up. and  in some very civila and friendly manner Georgis effectively passed me over to Joan.

Joan had a light blue Volkswagon beetle adn a dog anmed "treebark"

I began to spend a lot of time with Joan, she introduced me to her family and I felt quite attratected to and loving to her.

I was sstill traumatized by my MC accident and focused on healing. I felt like I was in my right group of people my age  similar interests different than the time with Cindy which was  deeper and  spiritually educational. This group with Joan was  more simple young adults Pop music and  age appropriate dramas.

Joan and I would spend time at the American river hang outs  river beaches.  warm autum sun. I don't rememgber what Joan was doing for work.

One afternoon at teh beach we had a memorable time because while we were relaxing on th ebeach her dog Treebakr wandered up the river and  found a large accumulation of dead and decaying salmon which ran that river. When Treebark came back she had rolled in the dead Salmon and then in the sand creating a thich coating of dead salmon and sand . This was the consistency of asphalt. THe Smell was the  worst thig I had ever smelled. and we had a 30 minute drive back home on a hot afternoon in the Volkswagon bug. I remember literally driving with my head out of the passenger window becaeus it was unberable in the car.

We laughed about that.

Also I remember a  female friend of theirs who we met at some gathering . She was a very attractive blond. who was  also a single mother. She was a stripper and  was being exploited.Meeting her  impacted me so I really never saw  Strippers in the same way and avoided situatioins wher e they were   I did not go to strip clubs or bars wher these women were being exploited.

When I was sufficiently recovered I retrned to Oakland where I got the apartment on 1516 1st ave. Joan and I stayed connected and she would often visit me. I had met some new friends  one of whom was Paul Katrosek,  Paul will get his own page , entrpreneurial survivor.

THe last TIme I had dinenr with  Joan was at the Wind jammer restaraunt in MOnterrey, I was workign for Mosler at the time and  she was  off on her own road.

Jan Rolph Piedmont High School

I was very serious about Jan, we did a lot of heavy petting and she woud often come to the theater and watch films from the booth .I also connected her to George Pauley (Owner) she  was a very talented artist and  was  creating some theater posters for pay.

Jan was born on April 18 same date as the 1906 San Francisco earthquake

Jan liked the desert and fleetwood Mac.

Her best Friend was Gretchen Hansen

The phenomenon of Leaving Highschool and dropping your relationships seems applicable here.

Note i saw George Pauley about  a month before he died. we had lunch at Bongo Burger and drove around Berkeley , we talked for over an hour and he  asked about Jan.. Very coincidental meeting

Penny Schultz

A very nice woman young very helpful inspirational entrepreneurial.

Penny  was a nice looking woman , German looking very light haired blond. She and her sister lived  on Fulton street in Berkeley. I recall attending a party there , I was too young but the party was pretty wild.

Very "hippy "

Penny's sister Suzy eventually married John Curl. (Son  Aaron)

Back to Penny, she helped me write my first Resume and produced it on an IBM word processor.

Penny  started a word processing business in Berkeley on Shattuck avenue

This adjacent to the  Berkeley BART station.

I was so grateful  because even though at that time I had very few items on my Resume  the form and format were perfect. I felt like this did give me some advantage.

Memories of penny are pleasant and sad since Penny passed away at a very young age.from Breast cancer.

She had talent skills and drive , the antithesis of 'Hippy"

She is never forgotten. Small gifts  at a crucial time of life. Thank you Penny.
